She loved the journal so much she wrote in it for hours every day. But then, Hitler took over Holland too! She had to go to a different school and she had to wear a star every day to show that she was a Jew. Her family decided to go into hiding and they hid behind a bookshelf in a small factory. Later, they were found and captured by the Nazis and were brought to concentration camps, horrible places where people did hard labor. Anne's father was the only person who survived the terrible war. He decided to make Anne's journal public, which she would have wanted.
