In such a diverse world I wish the same could have been said about Music history, and more specifically the Western Art Music Canon. "Canons disempower" say's Behrendt in the article, Literary canons exclude works no matter how selective canon makers are, written by Jordan Bates. Furthering the disempowerment argument, Kiram Thurman and Kristen Turner said it best when stating, "...there has been very little scholarly secondary literature that considers ways to diversify the western art music curriculum" in their article Musicology Now. In this Padlet, I will discover the problems that are associated with defining a canon. I will visit the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra's website, as well as the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra's website. Through each website, I will analyze the upcoming 2017-2018 year to determine how they innovate, if at all, musically. As I lookover The Charlotte Orchestra's home page I am greeted with a very familiar name, "Beethoven", as you can see below. Join us and the other thousand or so orchestras in the world performing symphony NO. 9 September 22 - 23 and if that isn't enough we play it twice a week almost every week so we're gonna force feed it too you no matter what (this music isn't bad at all just very repetitive). Wait a second, I think I see something unique, and dare I say, innovative. Music and the Holocaust, is performed by the ensemble and according to the Music Information Page, they "present a 45 minute themed, narrate program, performing music of significance during this period in history." Yes! it is innovative! this is an expression different than the many German classical composers that dominate the symphonic stage. I listened to a small excerpt of the piece and it was spectacular. There was almost a modern crisp and airy quality about it and maybe less violent and precise as similar pieces I have heard. This is truly innovation. Innovation outside of the canon. 

Now lets move on to the North Carolina website and try to dissect the truth of this symphonic orchestra as well! I went to the opening performance page for this week and again now accustomed to the stagnant repetition, Beethoven symphony NO. 9 is going to be performed. However unlike before I do not see even a small attempt at innovation. - I would like to see anything performed that seemed outside of the canon.
Do you see yourself in the music that is being performed?
- Yes and no, the music being performed is very old and can come across as ridged and rough with very little modern "twist". I have been told to have an "old soul" and can identify and understand the importance of the canon.
