Her words had cut deep, forcing him to confront the path he was on. After that night, he lost all contact with her, unsure if he’d ever see her again.

But fate had other plans. Years later, he unexpectedly found himself working at the same university as Jessica, their paths colliding once more. Whether it was coincidence or something more, Christian wasn’t sure—but he knew he owed her more than just a simple reunion.

Hyunjin and Christian met before either of them spiraled into their respective vices. Their bond was built on rare, genuine moments of connection—Christian was one of the few people who ever truly saw Hyunjin beyond the perfect son and political accessory. While everyone else was fooled by Hyunjin’s polished smiles and shallow charm, Christian read him like an open book.

When Christian started spiraling, Hyunjin—terrified of ruining his family’s pristine political image—chose to walk away.
The tabloids were circling, scandals looming, and Hyunjin's family wouldn’t survive the blow. So he left Christian behind, cutting ties coldly when Christian probably needed him most. It was self-preservation disguised as indifference.
Christian was left to drown in addiction and the pain of being abandoned by the one person he thought understood him.

Ironically, years later, Hyunjin fell into the same darkness—drugs, self-harm, suffocating under the weight of his "perfect" life. Meanwhile, Christian clawed his way back up, though not without scars.

Though the question of where she was lingered in the back of his mind, Christian never dared to push. A part of him feared offending his father or making him feel like his love and presence weren’t enough.

His father owned a well-known automotive chain in both Korea and Australia, so life was comfortable, more than that, they were well-off. Christian had every opportunity laid out in front of him, and for most of his childhood, he thrived. A bright student, always topping his class from elementary school through high school and well into his second year of college. Charismatic and outgoing, he was loved by his peers, respected by his professors, and admired campus-wide. He had a natural charm that drew people in. But above all, Christian loved basketball. It wasn’t just a sport for him; it was his escape, his safe space. Naturally, he became the team captain in college which became his pride and his identity.

Everything unravelled halfway through the second semester of his third year. It started with a heated argument between his father and a nosy colleague, their voices carrying farther than they should have. That’s when Christian heard it. His mother who he once imagined might have died or been forced away left. Not because she had to, but because she chose to. She gave birth to him and went back to Korea, wanting nothing to do with either of them.

For someone who grew up being adored, praised, and envied, the revelation shattered him. How could the one person meant to love him unconditionally walk away so easily?

By his fourth year, Christian was unrecognizable. He spiralled fast. Missing practices, showing up hungover, too high to function, barely dragging himself to classes. The once-reliable captain, the golden boy, is gone. It all came to a head one night. An overdose. He nearly died, saved only because a bystander happened to be there.

Rehab followed, along with therapy. It was his therapist who first suggested to look for his mother, that maybe facing the truth could help him heal. Surprisingly, his father agreed.

His father’s information about his mother was frustratingly vague. All he said was that she was a powerful figure and that she was someone who couldn’t afford a scandal, especially not one named Christian.

Determined to build his life back up, Christian refused his father’s financial support. He took odd jobs, gigs here and there to cover his expenses, driven by guilt and a need to make up for the mess he left behind. It was during one of those gigs, at a small event in the outskirts of Seoul, that he stumbled across a job ad: Custodian needed—Cheongdam University.

The work was far from glamorous, but it was steady. Quiet. A place where no one knew who he was or who he used to be. He’s been clean for almost two years now, but the temptation, the gnawing edge of withdrawal still lingers.
