Ethical Computing Information Wall by Gabriella A Urrego

My Ethical Computing Information Wall will present the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics as a clear guide for responsible and respectful use of technology. To make my Padlet engaging and practical, it will include resources such as images and videos that demonstrate how you and I alike can follow these ethical principles in our daily online practices. My wall will also address key questions: which of the commandments students most often violate, why such violations occur, and what strategies can be implemented to reduce or prevent unethical computing behavior.

Olivia Gambelin’s talk emphasizes that technology must be guided by ethics to ensure it truly serves humanity, not just efficiency or profit, in our current society. This showcases the need of the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics, which outline responsible and respectful use of technology to prevent harm and protect human dignity. Put together, they highlight that ethical principles are essential in shaping technological innovations like AI so that they benefit society in a meaningful way.

Q1 & 2: Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do students violate most often, and why?

I believe that Commandment 8, "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output," is the most common of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines broken by students. Simply put, this commandment means you should not copy someone else’s ideas or any kind of idea without giving them proper credit, or really any kind of work. Students often break this commandment through plagiarism, when students copy things like homework or even other classmates without giving credit. Many times, it happens because students are stressed by deadlines or think that borrowing work online is not a serious issue.

Q3: What do I think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

I think one way to reduce these issues is by improving digital literacy. It also helps when students actually learn how to cite sources correctly and understand the consequences of unethical computer use. At the end of the day, I feel like schools should push for a culture of integrity where honesty and respect for other people’s work are taken seriously. Based on my personal experiences here at Seton Hall, students should know better than to plagiarize.
