King Louis XVI Calls the Estates General to meet on May 5th, 1789. This meeting was called because of the financial problems France was facing. France was spending more money then was being taken in. During this meeting the 3 estates couldn't decide if they should vote by the amount of people or by estate.

Parisians Storm the Bastille 1789

The Parisians Storm the Bastille to gather weapons and gunpowder that they believed were stored in the Bastille. The Parisians had stormed the Bastille because of rumors that had been going around about royal troops coming to occupy Paris. This was represented as challenge to the regime.

Writing of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen 1789

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was adopted in August of 1789 by the National Assembly. This Declaration said that all people had natural rights, and men are born free and remain free and equal in rights.

Establishment of the New Constitution 1791

The establishment of the new constitution was written by The National Assembly. With this constitution it created a limited monarchy. this new constitution allowed the new legislative assembly to make laws, decide on issues of war and peace and collect taxes.

Napoleon Overthrows the Directory

Napoleon overthrows the directory and later sets up a three-man governing board called the Consulate in 1799. When Napoleon helped create the Consulate, he became First Consul. In 1802-1804, Napoleon becomes Consul for life and then crowns himself Emperor of the French.

Execution of the King and Queen/Beginning of the Reign of Terror

During the making of the New Constitution King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette had attempted to escape France. They were caught and thrown into prison. King Louis had been put on trial for being a traitor to France and was executed in January 1793 and the Queen was later executed in October 1793. After the execution of the King and Queen a man named Maximilien Robespierre who was the leader of The Committee of Public Safety had taken over power and started the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was only a year long and was where people were executed using the guillotine.

Napoleon Builds an Empire

From 1804-1812, Napoleon battled most of Europe and created an Empire. France annexed the Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Italy, and parts of Germany. He also abolished the Holy Roman Empire and cut Prussian territory in half.

The Congress of Vienna Meets

Diplomats and heads of the state sat down at the Congress of Vienna. The Congress of Vienna was a meeting of heads of state within Europe after Waterloo to restore firmness and order in Europe. The goal of this event was to create lasting peace while using the old order. They wanted to create a balance of power and protect the system of monarchy.

Execution of Robespierre

Robespierre and his allies were placed under arrest on July 27, 1794. Robespierre attempted to take his life because he didn't want to be executed by the guillotined. With a silly attempt, he only wounded his jaw. On July 28, Robespierre and 21 others were guillotined. 82 more of his followers were executed in the following weeks. With this execution, the Reign of Terror ended.

Napoleon Invades Russia 1812

Napoleon's army attempted to invade Russia during their winter. Napoleon's army was not prepared for the harsh cold winter and did not per pair enough food. Once Russia heard about the retreat of Napoleon's army they decided to attack. Napoleon's army had started with 600,000 men and the Russian army took out most of his army leaving him with only 10,000 men.

The Women’s March on Versailles 1789

On October 5, 1789 a group of women stormed the Palace of Versailles because they were angry about the famine and were demanding to see the king. The group of women brought the king and queen back to Paris and where they were held as virtual prisoners.

Napoleon Defeated at Waterloo

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on June 18, 1815. This battle concluded a war of 23 years which ended the attempts of the French trying to take over Europe. Napoleon was trying to reinstate at the Battle of Waterloo. The British defeated Napoleon which later made him exile his power for the second and last time.
