Question 6: What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

6. The theme of this poem is talking about death and illustrating for you what happens when she dies. When it states I heard a fly buzz this tells us that she was talking about death. Also, When it states "buzzing of the fly” refers to the presence of death. She wants the readers to understand that she is talking about how she is fading away/dying.

1.What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The tone of this poem is calm and serene. The speaker of the poem is a person that has died. This is known in the title itself. Although the speaker has died, they don't seem to be panicked by it, they seem like they've accepted their death. the line, "I willed my Keepsakes - signed away" implies that they've accepted their death because they made a will, passing on their belongings to loved ones. The poem can be seen as ironic, because the speaker seems calm despite knowing death is coming, and death is usually seen as a scary thing.

Question 7: How important is the role of sound effects, such as rhyme and rhythm? How do they affect tone and meaning?

7. The role of sound effects is important because they help visualize what is happening. When it says "then the Windows failed" this means that at that point she had lost contact with the outside world. You can almost picture what is happening. Also, this makes you feel calm, dreamy, and almost relaxed even though this talks about how she is dying

5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

The sound of the buzzing can actually symbolize what she hears when her senses shut off as she dies. in the line, "with Blue - uncertain - stumbling Buzz - Between the light - and me" The buzzing comes before she reaches the light, meaning her senses shut off right before she dies. The fly could also be a representation of death itself, or darkness. Flies in many ways are associated with death and flying around dead bodies and such. After the fly comes between the speaker and "the light", she says "the windows fail and then I could not see to see-". The fly representing darkness and coming between the speaker and "the light" could be the reason why she says she could not seem to see. These symbols arise from the context of this poem.
