How does Lahiri juxtapose the men's attitude toward assimilation and the women's attitude toward assimilation? Do you think this reveals anything about Lahiri's attitude/ideas toward certain cultural norms?

"I'm saying I don't want to raise Gogol alone in this country. Its not right. I want to go back."
Ashima is having a hard time assimilating to her culture because she does not feel comfortable getting out and exploring a world she does not know. She does not speak English well, so she has a difficult time connecting with others.

"He remembers suddenly about Gosh, his companion on the train, who had returned from England for his wife's sake. "It is my greatest regret, coming back," Gosh had confessed to Ashoke, mere hours before he was killed"
Ashoke is having an easier time assimilating to the culture because he is studying at school, so he gains more chances to talk to people. He has a reason to go out, where as Ashima is stuck at home, not doing much.

"She is terrified to raise a child in a country where she is related to no one, where she knows so little, where life seems so tentative and spare"
Ashima does not feel like she fits in, in the United States and she is scared to raise a baby in a place she does not know about. This shows how she is having a hard time assimilating because she feels scared. Earlier, she talks about how she wants her family to be there to help her, showing how she is homesick and wants to have the comfort of her mother and grandmother.

"He remembers the page crumpled tightly in his fingers, the sudden shock of the laterns glare in his eyes. But for the first time he thinks of that moment not with terror, but with gratitude. "Hello Gogol" he whispers, learning over his sons haughty face, his tightly bundled body"
Ashoke had an easier time choosing a name for his son than Ashima because she was waiting on her grandmother and had more worry for it than Ashoke did. This shows how Ashoke is assimilating more to the culture because he just picked a name after someone he admired, which was from the American culture. Ashima was waiting on the name from her grandmother because she was focusing more on the Bengali culture.

Lahiri juxtaposed the attitude of assimilation towards men and women because she shows how it is easier for the men to assimilate than the women, through Ashima and Ashoke. Ashoke has more opportunities to assimilate than Ashima did. We think this reveals how Lahiri is expressing how hard it is for others to assimilate into a culture that they are not familiar with.
