When designing a new space, the first step is creating a concept design—this is where the broad ideas for the space come to life. The concept is all about envisioning how the space will look, feel, and function. The goal is to create something that works well for the people who will use it. After that, space planning comes into play. This involves figuring out the best way to arrange things like walls, furniture, and other elements to ensure the space is practical, efficient, and easy to navigate. Finally, universal design takes these ideas even further, making sure the space is accessible to everyone, no matter their ability. This can include features like wider doorways, ramps instead of stairs, and adjustable furniture, all designed to make the space usable for people of all ages and abilities.

The GM 2021 design guidelines primarily focus on the design of vehicles, but the ideas can also apply to other spaces. For example, GM 2021 emphasizes creating vehicles that are easy to use for all kinds of people—whether through simple controls, adjustable seating, or easy-to-reach features. When we look at how these ideas can influence building design, it encourages creating environments that are more flexible and user-friendly. The implications of using these principles are significant because they shape how spaces are organized and what materials are used. Spaces designed with accessibility and adaptability in mind not only meet immediate needs but also provide long-term value by ensuring that everyone can use and enjoy them comfortably.

This design phase is where to decide on the overall layout, like where rooms should go, how people will move through the building, and what the space should feel like. For example, want to open up a cramped area to make it feel bigger or add windows to let in more natural light. The concept design also helps you plan for any special needs, like making the building more accessible or adding things like wider doorways or ramps.

When I’m redesigning a building, I use a REVIT to create a detailed digital version of the space. This helps me to visualize how the building will look and work . The model shows things like the layout, materials, and how everything fits together. It also makes it easy to try out different ideas and make changes quickly. Using BIM helps catch mistakes early, saves time, and ensures the design works as planned.

This week, we explored Concept Design and the different elements that go into a concept design report, such as space layout, landscape design, and design evolution. Space layout focuses on arranging different areas within a project, while landscape design looks at how outdoor spaces connect with the built environment. Design evolution shows the step-by-step development of a design, from initial ideas to the final version. This session gave me a better understanding of how to approach the design process and the value of visually presenting design progress. The examples provided made it easier to see how creative ideas turn into practical design solutions.

After returning from our term break, we had the opportunity to present our concept design reports. This presentation allowed me to showcase the work I had done so far, explain my design choices, and receive constructive feedback from both my peers and instructors. It was a valuable experience that helped me refine my ideas and improve my approach to design.

In addition to the presentations, we explored Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD) Analysis, which focused on assessing the environmental impact of our design decisions. This session helped me understand key sustainability principles, such as reducing energy consumption, improving natural ventilation, optimizing daylight use, and selecting eco-friendly materials. We also looked at strategies for enhancing a building’s overall performance, including better insulation, water conservation techniques, and integrating renewable energy sources.

Learning about ESD made me realize how crucial it is to incorporate environmental considerations from the very beginning of the design process rather than treating them as an afterthought. By doing so, we can create buildings that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. The discussion and examples shared during the session deepened my understanding of how sustainability and design go hand in hand.

This week, I focused on structuring and enhancing my schematic design board. I learned how to arrange the layout in a clear and visually effective way to ensure that my design ideas were communicated properly. Organizing the board required careful consideration of spacing, alignment, and the hierarchy of information so that the final presentation would be both professional and easy to understand.

One of the most helpful parts of the process was the peer review session. Seeing how others approached their schematic designs gave me fresh ideas and new perspectives. Receiving feedback on my own work was equally valuable, as it highlighted areas for improvement and helped me refine my design to meet the required standards. This collaborative exercise made me more aware of the importance of presentation and clarity in architectural design.

.

It was a productive session, as we had the chance to consult with Mr. Daniel and get guidance on any challenges or uncertainties we faced. His feedback was incredibly helpful in shaping my approach, offering new perspectives on how to improve the presentation of my design.

I also made several modifications to my focus area, incorporating new elements and refining details based on the insights I received. These changes helped align my design more closely with the project objectives while also improving the clarity and overall effectiveness of my presentation. I found the discussion on carbon calculation particularly engaging, as it deepened my understanding of how buildings contribute to environmental impact. It highlighted the importance of minimizing carbon emissions through smart design choices.

Energy modeling was also insightful, as it showed how we can optimize energy efficiency in our projects. Learning about different strategies to reduce energy consumption will be valuable when making sustainable design decisions. This session reinforced the need to consider environmental factors early in the design process to create more eco-friendly and efficient buildings.
