The Summary of Kongjwi

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Kongjwi who lived with her parents in a village named Dusan.

When Kongjwi was only 3-4 months old, her mother passed and her father remarried a sour woman with a daughter named Patjwi who also hated Kongwi.

Shortly after they married, her father passed as well which allowed for the stepmother and Patjwi to be as horrible to her as they liked. They tasked her with hard labor and dressed her in rags yet she never once complained.

One day, her stepmother ordered her to plow an entire field covered in rocks and weeds and told her to not return until she finished. As she attempted despite not having the correct materials, she struck a rock, and her hoe broke in two. She cried as she didn't know how she would be able to complete the task.

Just then, an ox appeared, offered her a basket of apples, and told her he would finish and Kongjwi started playing with him as a sign of gratitude.

As Kongjwi returned, her stepmother accused her of stealing the apples and assigned more labor for Kongjwi to complete.

After a few days, the new mayor invited everyone in the city to attend a ball. Kongjwi longed to go, but she was tasked to many hard chores. Like filling a bucket full of water, yet the bucket had a hole. Right as she had lost hope, a turtle appeared and helped her fill it with water. As the tasks continued, many animals came to help. Such as the sparrows helping her hull the rice and a fair that made Kongjwi a beautiful silk hanbok and a floral silk gomusin.

As she arrived, the mayor fell in love and asked her to marry him. In fear of her stepmother humiliating her, she ran away and dropped her left shoe in the Duwol stream, later to be found by the new Mayor.

The new mayor roamed the entire village with the lost shoe, trying it on each and every woman, in the hope of finding its owner. Finally, the lost shoe fit Kongjwi. They were to live happily ever after.

That is until Patjwi drowns Kongjwi in the stream in her fit of jealousy.

Patjwi then disguises herself as Kongjwi and starts living Kongjwi’s life at the palace as the mayor’s wife. But later Kongjwi appears in her husband's dream and tells him all that has happened. The mayor finds her body in the stream and brings her back to life by giving her a kiss.

The Mayor then puts Patjwi and her mother in a dark prison and Kongjwi and the mayor can truly live their happy ending.

This behavior that she displayed even when she wasn't receiving it is why all good things came into her life. However, she still had her struggles even after getting her well-deserved fortune.
