Lev's friend, CyFi, is described as an "umber." Readers learn that the terms "umber" and "sienna," which are paint colors, have replaced the notions of "black" and "white." On page 122 CyFi says that "people liked that a whole lot better… Better words. Didn’t have no value judgment to them. CyFi makes passing comments about his dads, which startles Lev; "Cy had said ‘dads’ before, but Lev had figured it was just some more Old Umber slang. Of course, he’s heard of male parenting, but in the sheltered structure of his life, such things always belonged to an alternate universe” (125). CyFi's dads did not influence the plot line much, but it's clear that Shusterman is pointing out how people in our society don't condone homosexuality or see it as an otherworldly issue.

Storking is when a mother leaves her newborn child on the doorstep of a house, obligating that family to take the child. What ends up happening is families place the child on neighbor's doorsteps until the baby dies from lack of care. What initially sounds like a good plan has proven to be faulty and corruptible. Even those being unwound- the kids that no one seems to want- have stories to tell. After spending hours in a crate with three other girls, Risa notices how her perception of them changes; “The three girls look remarkably different from her memory of them when they first got in. Getting to know someone in blind darkness changes your impression of them. The large girl isn’t as overweight as Risa had thought. Tina isn’t as tall. While this can relate to many current day issues regarding human lives, I believe it points mostly towards the death penalty. In the case of an unwind and a death row inmate, they have both lived a life that diverged from what was right or desirable and were sentenced to death (or unwinding). Unwinds are still people, as readers come to see throughout the novel. No matter what someone does or does not do, they are still human and have a right to life. This idea can be applied to all social situations regarding human lives no matter their age, gender, or ethnicity. This book, while controversial, brings light to issues that many people do not want to address.
