These two terms are often a bit confusing, I personally used to think they had the same meaning, but reflecting on what each word addresses I realised how different they are. I can understand "Vocabulary" as a set of words that are used in a specific context, which varies according to the environment you are in; on the other hand, I understand "Lexis" as all the words that comprise a language, in all their forms and variations, regardless of the context in which they are used. In conclusion, I can say that Lexis encompasses all the vocabulary of a language.

Maybe these could be similar, but I think that vocabulary is all words and expressions that someone knows of the language and lexis is all the words and expressions that compound the language. In other words, the term lexis refers to the complete set of words and expressions that make up a language, while vocabulary refers to the specific words and expressions that an individual knows and uses.

From my point of view, vocabulary/lexis refers to the whole set of words, sentences and even expressions that we, as learners of a second language, must learn.
