Alex Morgan Documentary

I watched a “soccermentary” documentary about Alex Morgan’s soccer journey. I chose this activity because she has helped me tremendously with my high school soccer career so far and hoping the years to come as well. She is incredibly determined and never gives up. She teaches young girls all around the world about never giving up until you get what you believe in. I learn so much from her everyday because she never fails to keep surprising me. One minute she is in Haiti helping underprivileged kids and the next minute she is scoring the winning World Cup goal for the US national team. She has taught me one of the main components in soccer where if someone tells you that you can't do something, prove them wrong and show them what they never expected. Before I really knew who Alex was I had heard a lot about her and thought she was a mediocre player. I had no idea what the hype was all about, but soon she proved my thoughts wrong. I saw her play in the World Cup against North Korea she completely moved me. On the field, her speed and technical skills were off the charts, while off the field her supportiveness of her teammates was incredible. I started to watch documentaries and I had read a few books on her experience as a younger child and growing as a soccer player and a person. She always makes me strive to do something greater and do the impossible. Without Alex Morgan helping me as a player I never would’ve developed as the player and person that I am today.

Link to documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBilth6Y_sM

I read Winning Soccer for Girls by Deborah W. Crisfield and Mark Gola. I chose this activity because soccer is a huge part in my life. Reading about the struggles that women have gone through when playing girls soccer just pushes me further. The two authors told a few stories on women being told they couldn’t play soccer as well as men or that they couldn’t shoot a ball as hard as a man could. The women told how they reacted to these obstacles positively and how it made them a better player. I learned that when someone tells you that you cannot do something, prove them wrong. I also learned very meaningful and descriptive tactics for when playing girls soccer that I can use in my daily soccer lifestyle. Soccer is all about being focused, committed, and positive, with those mental tips, winning will not be a problem. My prior knowledge was definitely changed. I have been playing for almost a decade and learn new things about the sport everyday. I used to think soccer came naturally, but now i know practice plays a major role in becoming a stronger, more fit player.

Interior Design Youtube Videos

I chose this activity because interior design has always been one of my life time passions that I hope to continue with into college and as a job. I am so fascinated about interior design because I think it really describes the mood in a room. For example, if the the house is either on a beach or in a more relaxing type of area with calm vibes, then the interior designer would use lighter colors to describe the calm and relaxing feel of the room and house. Even though I did have prior knowledge about interior design community and how it works, I am not even close to learning everything. These few videos helped me understand how to make an interior design with Google Sketchup, run over the basics of interior design, and learn from others personal experiences. My prior knowledge was changed because even though I did understand the Interior Design process, I have never been in a real life situation with a client, so it was very interesting to see an example of what that is like. Interior Design has always been a passion of mine and I hope I enjoy it in the future.

Interior design Documentary links :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgnNaU0oDXM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSOGReRWrBw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCSX_mq-P4s

Baking (bread and pastries) Documentary

I chose this activity because I have always had a passion for baking. I watch tutorials all of the time about how to make certain foods or seasonings, but one thing I have not learned about it where the products and foods I use come from and how they are made. This documentary explained how and where bread is made. Bread is a crucial addition to many American dinners, snacks, or the making of other foods. I use it all of the time when I cook to either have it as an appetizer or to add small pieces as a topping. I learned how to design a cake, structure a bakery, and the materials need to make bread and other pastries. While baking and/or owning a bakery, these skills are very crucial to becoming successful baker. My thoughts were changed because I had no idea what a real bakery was like “behind the scenes”. I never thought it was chaotic, focused, and exciting all at once. I have always loved baking foods, which took huge concentration and patience, but I never knew the amount of focus that was needed in a real bakery. When the bakers were baking the pastries and bread, they had to be focused 24/7 to make sure they didn’t leave a piece in the oven for too long or mess up on the detailing of icing. Without the help from these tips, I would not be the focused and patient baker that I am today.

Documentary link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1Xg3EVFnJY

I chose the activity of reading an article about Serena Williams because she is a huge role model to me in my life. I have always loved tennis and would not have started playing if it wasn’t for professional, Olympic winning, women tennis player Serena Williams. She has taught me so much through my latest journey as a tennis player, but most importantly she has taught me the importance of getting up when you lose. Tennis is a lot of back and fourth points that happen very quickly, each game could go either way. Serena William’s striving to be the best came from her never backing down. If she lost, she only worked harder to prove she was the best. Before I had ever heard of Serena Williams, I never knew I would be so passionate about tennis. The first match I ever played, I lost. Even though I was 9, it hit me harder than ever. I wanted to give up and never play again, I was devastated, but soon enough my parents were watching Serena’s match on TV. I had never heard of her before this, but she immediately caught my eye. I looked at her and said I want to be like that someday. As my nine year old self, I definitely had bigger dreams than I expect now, but Serena still kept me playing the sport I love to this day.

https://www.biography.com/people/serena-williams-9532901

The Caroline House Article

I chose this activity because charity is a big part of my life. Once every couple months I visit the Caroline House and help tutor kids who do not have enough money to have a proper education. Being a part of this program has changed my life. Living in a well educated society such as Westport, has taught me to be thankful for my education. I have learned and seen so many others who do not get the opportunities that many other young students have. These adults and young children have gone through so much and they deserve the best education possible, which the Caroline House is helping provide for them. I hope to expand to other charities as well to find other ways to help kids with their education. My thoughts changed the first day I stepped into the house. I was not prepared to see young children so eager to learn and thrive for their education. Before being a part of the charity community, I never thought of how thankful I should be for my education. These young children and adults have taught me so much over the days that I have helped out there and lessons that I will never forget.

Article link:

http://www.thecarolinehouse.org/mission-goals/
