Morphine was a very revolutionary medicine, it helped dull the pain of wounded soldiers, the soldiers then wouldn't have to feel nearly half the pain. when morphine was administered the doctors could then begin to clean out wounds and put bandages on said wounds.
Cleaning out wounds would've been painful without the use of morphine, instead they would just amputate effected areas and that would be the end of the story.
