I personally like graphic organizers in the classroom. I think they are effective when teaching on different ideas and concepts that overlap and differentiate. However, I don't think that you should use graphic organizers for every lesson. I think doing a graphic organizer as a whole group and having it on the board is beneficial for students to understand how to start comparing and contrasting, as well as doing a whole group lesson.

I think graphic organizers can be useful for visual learners, if done correctly. They can be overdone (not every topic needs a graphic organizer to be understood) or misused (a Venn diagram for two things that are unrelated). I personally will skip a reading in a textbook and look at a graphic organizer to understand information better than by just reading it. I use Venn diagrams in lessons and the kids love them. I have not used any other kinds yet, but I hope to soon!

I grew up completing graphic organizers in every class and I began to have a bitter attitude towards them. Now that I'm becoming a teacher and looking at them in a different way, I like the concept of an organizer. I think they are a great way for students to organize their ideas and pick apart stories or topics that are being studied. I used a venn diagram in my preschool lesson when I was teaching the students about comparing and contrasting. I would like to learn more about different types of organizers and how they can be used in the classroom.

Graphic organizers are a great way for students to organize thoughts and pick out the main idea and details of the work. I think graphic organizers can be used to see what students know before the lesson and to find out their knowledge gain. I do use them when I am teaching lessons. I actually have at least one planned for my unit. I do find them effective because it allows me to see what the students know with a quick and easy glance. It helps students to organize their thoughts.

I often see teachers (even some of our profs) using them as busy work. There is no depth or true meaning or conversation attached to it. I think it is important that we use G.O.s for genuine purposes. I have used G.O.s in some of my lessons and if I am intentional about how it is used, it works really well and students better understand the concept. But there have been a few times that my G.O. was just for work for students to do and the quality of work was less than good.

For me, as a visual learner, graphic organizers are helpful in seeing the bigger picture and making connections with what Im reading. It's really important to choose the appropriate type for each text, otherwise it will be really confusing.

I think graphic organizers are great most of the time, if they are used properly. A graphic organizer is a great way for students to clearly state their ideas and organize them as well. A graphic organizer can help students understand what they read as well as document important information. However, sometimes I think teachers use graphic organizers too much. Graphic organizers are a really easy thing to give to students and have them work as somewhat of a time filler. I think as teachers we need to be careful that there truly is a purpose behind giving students graphic organizers to fill out, instead of simply using them as a time filler.

However, many times, graphic organizers are the traditional Venn Diagrams, etc. and they are not used to their fullest potential. I think that if you are going to use a graphic organizer, you should allow the students to pick the organizational design that makes the most sense to them. They should be able to lay out the organizer however they choose, or they should be able to pick their own from a variety of options. Just like everything else, this is not one-size-fits-all.

They are great tools to just get a student's thinking down on paper. It could be a list for them to brainstorm or a chart like a KWL. I think about how a graphic organizer is a way for a struggling writer to just get that first step down, knowing what they want to write about and what topics they are going to cover. I know that growing up, I always have struggled with starting a paper because I never know where to start, however, if I do something as simple as jot my thoughts down, I don't have such a hard time starting my paper.

So when one of my teachers would provide a graphic organizer of some sort, I usually was on cloud nine. However, sometimes, I think it is important to organize information independently of the graphic organizer. Students need to practice finding the facts, drawing conclusions, compare and contrast, amongst other skills on their own. They should be used as a guide but not as a requirement (at least not all the time).

Students do not even need to just write words in the bubbles but they can draw images to represent an idea. This is the perfect tool for students to engage in brainstorming, fact finding, sorting, and breaking down a text or thought. Professor Dubusky recently showed as a website to create online graphic organizers, called popplet I believe, and that would be extremely relevant and innovative for the classroom.

I personally like graphic organizers. As an IS many students with disabilities find the graphic organizers to be very useful. They can separate their thoughts while still seeing the connection among them all. I feel that they should be utilized in the classroom. I have used them when teaching lessons. It was successful. They have used Venn diagrams to compare characters, stories, or a movie to a story. I have used T-charts, and brain storm webs. All of which enhanced their thought processes. Some students require the implementation of graphic organizers as part of the accommodations or goals on IEP documents.

When I was in elementary school, I personally did not like graphic organizers. They did not help me greatly, so I was never a fan of when my teacher required for us to complete a graphic organizer. I believe the biggest reason for this is because the main graphic organizer my teacher would have us use is the concept map. Because they were overly used, I grew to dislike graphic organizers. However, they are an extremely useful tool. Varying the type of graphic organizers that are used can greatly benefit students by helping them organize their thinking while not wearing out one specific type of organizer.

I also think that graphic organizers are a great tool for students to use and allow them to organize what they read effectively. However, I also believe that there are so many create ways to make different organizers. Some students tend to panic when they see graphic organizers, so teachers should make them fun! Here is an example of one that I quickly made for the student I tutored!

Graphic organizers are a useful tool that can be used in any subject area. I have not yet used them in a lesson but I know that I will end up using them when I have my own classroom. When I was in school, I did find them effective because they helped me to comprehend texts and see comparisons and contrast between words and other things.

The great thing about graphic organizers are that they are great at providing a visual for the students. After we read a book creating a graphic organizer together will be a great way to see what the students know. It is also a great opportunity for the students to work together. A large part of the elementary standards are comparing texts. A graphic organizer is the most effective way to do so.

Graphic Organizers are something that always found fun, and helpful! I like to keep all of my stuff organized, and color coded, etc... so graphic organizers are slices of heaven for me. For students, they can be rather taunting though. Sometimes students stress about how the graphic organizer is presented (most often they are presented in a way that intimidates students and makes them feel pressured to find the perfect information to pt on their organizer). Graphic organizers do not have to cause such a panic, they can look however you want them too! Then can even be created by the students themselves in a writing journal so that students know exactly what is expected of them from the organizer. There are so many great ways to use them in a classroom.
