Clustering/Webbing/Mapping

I like the concept of clustering/webbing/mapping for several reasons. When it comes to writing, even now as an adult in college, I still use webbing/mapping as part of my brainstorming process.

I think we use SDAIE strategies with ELD students to try several approaches to learning and this strategy can be useful to me as a teacher working with ELD students to see what their understanding of the word/concept being mapped is and what they associate it with.

Posters or Graphic Organizers

I absolutely love the idea of posters. A lot of students are visual or hands on, and this concept allows for both. Students can create posters (like comic strip posters) or graphic organizers (such as fishbone diagrams or flow charts). By creating these visual tools themselves, they have a greater opportunity to retain the information.

I think SDAIE strategies promote the success of ELD students by providing many different ways in which a student can learn, process, and retain the information being presented.

Journals

I have always enjoyed the idea of writing in a journal when I was at the elementary grade level. I remember that the best part of writing in our journals at that age was that we were not graded on the journals based on spelling or grammar mistakes. Journals were a safe space where you were given a theme or topic, and you could freely write your thoughts.

Even though I would like to teach at the younger level, I have seen journals even in TK classrooms. This is definitely a great tool I plan to use in the classroom with ALL of my students, but I think it will also help my ELD learners.

Round Robin

The strategy of Round Robin is often used in classrooms and I think it is a great strategy to use with ELD students, especially when its used for all students but ELD students are also a part of the group. It allows ELD students to see things from the perspective of non-ELD students and vice versa.

This is a great strategy that I will also implement in my classroom because I believe this is a simple yet effective way to have all students engage and contribute.
