The play begins when Freddy Eysnford-Hill goes out to catch a cab for his mother and sister, but accidentally runs into Eliza Doolittle and knocks all of her flowers that she is trying to sell to the ground. This is where we discover that Eliza has horrible manners and dialect. There is a big commotion between Eliza, Colonel Pickering and and Higgins because Eliza first believes that Higgins is a cop trying to arrest her, but in reality he’s just taking notes about her speech. Higgins made the comment that he could make her into a duchess. Eliza takes him up on that offer, but Mrs. Pearce finds it unethical right from the beginning. Pickering and Higgins make a bet that Higgins will have Eliza speaking and acting like a duchess in six months. Eliza is a slow learner and is very stubborn at that. Higgins treats her terribly and only sees her as an uneducated flower girl, while Pickering treats her like a lady. Her first test is at Mrs. Higgins’ home, where she officially meets Freddy, who instantly falls in love with her and the way she talks, even though she starts talking in slang again. The second test was at the ambassador’s party, which was a huge success. Pickering and Higgins congratulate each other, but Eliza is angry that she isn’t given any credit and she throws her slippers at Higgins. She runs away to visit her father, only to find out she doesn’t belong in her part of town anymore and that her father is now in the middle class because of Higgins and is to get married in the morning. Once Higgins and pickering discover that she is missing, he goes to search for her and finds her at Mrs. Higgins house. He asks for her to come back, but when she says she wants to be treated better, he says he’ll treat her the same because that’s how he treats everyone. She decides to marry Freddy and to go attend her father’s wedding.
