This is il Duomo, the dome of the Church of Santa Maria del Fiore. The cathedral lacked a dome for decades, but Filippo Brunelleschi figured a way to build this massive dome out of iron hoops, wood and brick. It has no internal supports.

This is the statue of David, it was made by the amazing sculptor Michelangelo. The Wool Guild in Florence wanted a giant statue of David. A huge block of marble was brought to Florence for the task. 2 sculptors tried to carve, but they failed. In 1501 Michelangelo was given an 18 foot tall piece of marble. And when it was finally finished Michelangelo thought it was the best sculpture ever made.

This is the Mercato Nuovo, one of the most financial marketplaces in Europe. People came to buy goods like silk, wool, and gold. Many wealthy families traveled there for wealthy goods.

This is the Orsanmichele, a church that is also used for trade guilds. Davinci`s connection with Orsanmichele is through his teacher Verrocchio´s commissioned for Orsanmichele bronzes. Davinci sketched his inventions in his notebook that was more than 700 pages long. Sometimes in his notebooks he would write backwards.

This is the Palazzo Medici, the private residence of the house of Medici. Medici were patrons of many leading Renaissance artists. When artists gathered at Palazzo Medici they exchanged ideas like perspective.

This is the Casa di Dante, it contains exhibits that illustrate life in Florence at the time of the great poet Dante Alighieri. Dante wrote a poem The Divine Comedy in the vernacular, native speech. Before the poem was published people had thought that the local language was not suitable for fine writing, but when the poem became celebrated the language Dante used became the language of the Italian Renaissance.

This is the Prince, a famous book that came from the Renaissance. Niccolo Machiavelli served in the government of Florence. After he lost his government, he used his experiences in politics in Republican Rome. The Prince as satire, meant to inform and forewarn the general population about the strategies that the Prince uses to seize and maintain power.
