Similarly to women equality, the UN sees the importance of enforcing equality of indigenous groups, especially the ethnic minority. However, various ways to protect those groups are spread out to many different goals within the SDG:
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
2.3 want to double agricultural productivity of small-scale food producer, particularly from indigenous groups, through secure and equal access to land and other resource.
Goal 4
4.5 strives to eliminate disparities in education, particularly to indigenous groups.

These are of course not the only two goals that specifically target indigenous groups. Seeing the current inequality that the aforementioned situation of indigenous groups, many of the goals also strive to improve the living standard of those groups. I.e goal 1 - eliminating poverty, goal 2- eliminating hunger, etc.

Discrimination against indigenous people is also a common issue. Even in HICs such as the US, indigenous people are being underpaid, facing inferior education, and a lower life expectancy rate. While taking up of 5% of the world population, indigenous people represents ony 15% of the world's poverty.

Indigenous people are more likely to be discriminated because of their culture, class, and gender. They're more likely to die in childbirth and discrimination by abuse by the authority and people from other communities. In 1990, Peru government got away with sterilizing 2000 indigenous women.

In many countries, indigenous people are still underrepresented. In Croatia, minorities are guaranteed 1 to 3 seats within a parliament if they're above 1.5% of the population.

In many countries, minority groups are denied of their cultural rights and must give up their culture and integrate with the society that the government see fit. Many indigenous groups are also denied of social service or their version being too undeveloped. Indigenous people are also more likely prone to lose their land to the ever expanding business operating in their area.

The importance of indigenous empowerment

This brings a lot of economic, cultural, and social benefits.

As stated in the previous Padlet, having more iterated means that a country would have a better chance to push itself from being a low income and truly advance economically and socially. Having more educated indigenous people also means having a larger workforce and they would be able to elevate themselves from the poverty line.

Giving indigenous people a larger voice also means having a more equal representation of a country, where they could improve situations that others wouldn't think of due to their social status and the difference in cultural origin.

Respect indigenous groups also help preserve the culture of that country, maintaining cultural value of it. This is also potential for the tourism industry, where it would help the economy.

Effectiveness of indigenous policies

There are many indigenous empowerment policies worldwide, with varying degrees of success.

NGOs within Africa
There are many NGOs operating within Africa. This is vital, as even though much of Africa has laws against indigenous discrimination, not many could actually enforce it, especially those in Sub-Saharan Africa. For example, BIRUDA aims to protect the indigenous land such as forests, being financed by a third party instead of the Cameroon government.

Many other NGO projects target the welfare of the indigenous people themselves, such as The Community Media Grants Project. The project aims to improve the voice of indigenous groups using radio as a media, therefore giving them opportunity to have freedom of speech and free journalism in indigenous community broadcasts.

There are drawbacks, however, especially as there's only so much that these NGOs could do. The government is still a vital role for improving the lives of the indigenous people, especially as they're the only legitimate power in policy making.
