I do not agree with this quote because technically, once one's body parts are not attached to the original body, that person is not alive. Their soul dies once the heart of that body has stopped beating. Their soul does not live on in one eye, one toe, one lung; once the original human stops breathing, themselves and every part of their body no longer is a home to their soul.

In this novel, after the Second Civil War (Heartland War) was fought over reproductive rights, the Bill of Life was born. This bill legalizes unwinding and storking. This bill also states that the human life is not to be destroyed... until the age of 13. Between the ages of 13 and 18, the parents of a child can choose to have them "unwound". That is to say that the child's organs will be transplanted to different people who need them to live. Storking, the other part of the bill, says that one may leave their newborn infant at the door of a random home and once the door of that home is opened, the child legally belongs to that family.
While one would think that the end result of a war fought over reproductive rights would have a result that raises the dignity of life, it instead, further destroys the worth behind a human life.

Roland is set to be unwound by his parents after he beats up his father for beating his mother. Roland's life is viewed, by his parents, as an inconvenience. Rather than work on family problems, it is easier for Roland's parents to have him unwound and say that he "will live on". However, Roland dies when he is unwound. His arm is given to Connor and no part of Connor, once given the arm, lives in Connor. For Roland's soul has died. While Connor possesses what was once another human being's arm, the previous owner is gone.
