The chapter ends with Roland not being able to talk and eventually not being able to see or hear. This chapter taps into his immense fear that he is fealing throughout the unwinding process. This is without a doubt murder because of how the child is no longer a living, breathing human being who is in their own body. The person was literally cut up into a million and one pieces only to be distributed to the people who can afford a transplant. By unwinding someone, their right to life and to choose what they want is taken away from them. By divided state they mean dead but in nicer terms. The government has signed off on legally killing children after they have already lived at least thirteen years of their lives. Some of these children like Lev are tithes, which are people that are signed up to be unwinds from the day they are born. These people feel it is a blessing to give to the greater good. While this might be a valid train of thought, how dying for the "greater good" good? It's not. Unwinds are not alive in other people, they died a tragic death to allow someone else a better life. Why do some people deserve to live while others don't deserve to live? This shows how from the time a child turns thirteen till they turn eighteen they have the constant thougt of 'I might be unwound today,' no child should have to live like that. Connor and Risa excaped from being unwound; however, they both had to live with the fact that they had to escape authorities till they were eighteen years old. that is n immense amount of pressure to put on a teenager. They have to constantly have to think about whether they are going to be killed or not.
