Basics of street harassment

Street harassment can be defined "experiencing unwanted sexual attention from strangers in public". Street harassment is considered a form of sexual terrorism. It occurs usually between a man and a woman, where the man is the perpetrator and the woman is the victim.

Victims of street harassment can experience anything from "mild discomfort to intense fear", according to Lucía Sánchez (Clinical Psychology degree). Also, the feelings evoked in a harassment situation may reinforce stronger feelings like terror about being raped or in another situation of sexual violence. This effects, long term, have a psychological negative impact in women.

Another important aspect to consider is that men and women have different perceptions about street harassment. This has a social historical background; men have always been more powerful and stronger physically, and abuse from men towards women has historically been more present in our society. Women typically perceive street harassment as "an intrusion into personal space, a humiliating experience, a potential threat a type of violence, and abuse against them", while men don't give much importance to it, because they lack the feelings of insecurity and impotence that women experience.

Sexual objectification

Street harassment is directly related to women self-objectifying themselves. Objectification, in this context, is a prioritization of a woman's physical and sexual appearance, over other characteristics.

Studies show that women that experience street harassment are more likely to experience self-objectification. This happens as a coping mechanism, since the majority of women that live a street harassment situation have a passive response (ignoring and feeling insecure, not answering back) towards the perpetrator.

Also, self-objectification can have several impact on a woman's physical and mental health. According to Nature Reviews Psychology, women that perceive themselves as objectified, are more likely to be perceived by society in this way; society is more likely to dehumanize them. Following this line, women that self-objectify are perceived like people with lower intelligence levels, and not taken as seriously compared to women that don't slef-objectify. This self perception can affect negatively a woman's self esteem, making her feel as if she deserves de street harassment. This occurs because people stop considering a woman's characteristics, and instead only pay attention to her sexual features. This makes the victim feel as if she does not have any characteristics to offer, resulting in an insecure woman.

I want to use lines and shapes on top of the actual collage, in order to give more detail to my artwork and to evoke feelings and effects on the reader.

I won't use color, since I want my images to be in black and white, but I will use value. I want to make a clear differences between the high and low values, as seen in the image above. I will use editing apps to edit my images before printing them, and I will give lights and shadows to them after I print them with paint.

I want to play around with space by arranging the layout of my images. Even though is not appreciated in the reference image, I want to make the woman in the image smaller than the perpetrator. I want to do this in order to give the sensation of a weak victim, and evoke impotence in the viewer.
