This tutorial provides time and space for you to yarn with your tutor and each other about what you have learnt over the past 4 weeks in any aspect of MD1. This may include societal issues that are resonating with you or challenging you and how these issues relate to medicine.

Over the past 4 weeks you have been recording your learning and reflections in your e-Portfolio. Your reflections should include any questions that you would like to ask a health clinician to understand how your learning might apply in the practice of medicine or across different practice settings. This tutorial offers time and space for you to explore these questions in a question and answer format.

NACCHO Fact:
According to the 2020-21 report, NACCHOs provide 3.1 million episodes of care each year for about 410,000 people at 550+ sites. These are such impressive numbers and yet need requires even more than this, towards which NACCHO is striving.

Questions:
1. What is your best piece of advice for how a medical student can begin to foster a culturally safe environment in an interaction that may be lead by another clinician ie. we are observers in a GP placement or hospital setting?
2. Competence seems to be particularly difficult to ascertain in instances of mental health conditions. While we touched on some of this briefly in our tutorial, I was wondering given the high prevalence of mental health conditions today whether this is calling into question competence more frequently or whether the severity of the mental health status remains the determining feature and so may still be an infrequent ethical consideration?

I think this is a fair move, and this is what my GP clinic for placement has recently done too, but it seems inevitable that many patients are not happy about this shift and have many complains towards the clinic, especially the receptionist staff, as they are the ones they first encounter :((

What are your thoughts on this?
