Very clear explanation and examples. A lot of the terms would be very challenging for Year 8s though. Even most of our class genuinely found those activities difficult. Might be best to change the language used in explanation of the concept and find some more accessible examples / activities.

Really good lesson. Nominalisation is something I'd personally like to practice in my writing a little more. The teacher-led strategies and student questioning were effective because i needed particular help with scaffolding my skill levels. Just need to make sure that kids actually know the difference between adjectives, nouns etc. Good stuff.

Great progression of the skills involved in nominalisation, recognising the difficulties (dryness) and ideas to make it more accessible. I agree that this seemed more like something to be done more regularly rather than as one big idea.

Well scaffolded - think-pair-share was useful at the beginning and then gradually progressing to individual practice was a well-linked learning sequence.
You could even get students to nominalise their first essay or piece of writing and re-assess themselves

I enjoyed the lesson. The worked examples were helpful and the last exercise was challenging but constructive when explained in more detail as a review of the activity

Good lesson, the activities were highly suited to the learning objective and the example words and sentences were relevant to student writing
. Something to consider is how to assess student understanding, especially without Success Criteria :p

Yeah, definitely consider breaking it down more in future iterations. The difference between noun and verb forms of some things like effect/affect as well as advice /advise is a pretty important thing to highlight to students. That's all I've got.

I had never heard of nominalisation before, i think yr 8's would need time to understand the way the sentence changes when it occurs - especially considering there are not hard and fast rules about the way the sentence is re ordered!

I liked the structuring of the activities, it built up nicely - well scaffolded.

Have direct teaching before the activity was great and then chunking the activity into nominalising individual words before working on sentences was very good scaffolding.
You can have an activity where students select different sentences of their choice from the text that they're reading in class and try to nominalise them. You can also embed nominalisation into the start of lessons - 5 min - as a DO NOW activity/entry slip activity. Won't take much time from the lesson but ensures that students are continually practising this skill throughout an English unit. Well done! :)

The consideration that this wouldn't be a whole lesson unless it was targeted is great. The activities could definitely be interspersed in other lessons
