In 2012 I completed a study abroad program in London, England. I lived here for 6 months and it was the first time I had ever been that far away from home and my family. During study abroad I also visited Spain, Ireland, Greece, France, Morocco and Scotland. This was life changing for me, because it made me realize how big the world actually is. I got to see many plays, eat different foods and meet some friends that I am still close with to this day.

When I was in the 3rd grade, I entered a reading competition at my school. The goal was to read as many books as possible in the school year. I can't remember how many books I read and I know I didn't win, BUT I realized reading was one of my passions. I enjoyed being able to imagine the places and people I read about. My favorite series at the time was the Full House books, because that was also my favorite TV show.

In my Latino culture, turning 15 is a big deal, but I wasn't sure that I wanted a party for my own birthday. I wanted to go to Disney World instead. However, two weeks before my birthday I changed my mind and told my parents that I wanted a quinceañera. This was very stressful for them but they were able to pull it off in our own special way! I went to the mall and got an outfit I loved and invited my closet family and friends. Then the next day we went to the lake and chilled there all day. It was a great birthday.

When I was 11 years old, my mom and I gained our U.S. citizenship and returned to Mexico for the first time in almost ten years. I remember we went during Spring Break and it was exciting. It was also an emotional experience for my mom. It was crazy to finally see in person all the family members, places and things that my parents had talked about growing up. I believe that this is something unique to immigrant children- hearing the stories of life in a past country. Since then, I have been back to Mexico 4 times.

2020-Living During a Pandemic and Racial Justice Movement

In 2020, the virus COVID-19 created a world wide pandemic. This required everyone to quarantine, wear face masks and limit their social interactions. During this time, there were many protests advocating for political and racial justice. This picture shows just one of the peaceful protests that happened in Chicago. This time has made me appreciate my loved ones and realize how blessed I am. It has made me want to advocate for others and become informed of policies and issues outside of my own world. Although it's been hard to live and work remotely, I am grateful because I believe this is all making me a better person.
