Who: Isabel has a new plan of escape

In the chapters, some believed if you worked with the British, you will receive freedom. So this got Isabel thinking. She decided when the British came, she would approach them and offer her service. But when she did, Captain Campbell couldn't accept her service because they do not employ run away slaves owned by Loyalists.

Isabel was very worried about the horrible weather coming through. Eventually a very bad storm came through and struck the city at night time. Lightning struck and destroyed/burnt a house, and it killed a lot of soldiers. At least 13 of them.

Isabel was in church when the invasion began, three cannon blasts went off and shook the church. Isabel decided she wanted to follow everyone outside to see what was going on, and the officer Madam was talking to said the 'war' has officially begun. But the officer mentioned that the generals were supposedly taking care of the invasion/war that was taking place.

Why: Why did Isabel say "I was chained between two nations."? She said this because both sides couldn't or didn't help her. Isabel felt hopeless and she now must fend for herself. In chapter 30, she kept saying many times "It mattered not." This shows that Isabel had lost hope.

Sarah and the British soldiers

Sarah is the wife of one of the soldiers. She is now in charge of what is going on at the Lockton house. She is like a replacement for Becky.

Some of the officers sleep in the bedrooms while many of the soldiers and their wives sleep in the cellar where Isabel sleeps.
