There were many opportunities for the students to work together. The student's partially gave the teacher their full attention. The student's seemed more interested in teasing each other and trying to capture the attention of others by making noises. I associated these actions with the age of the students.

In my 5th/6th grade observations, the students were definitely more chatty than the 7th/8th grade student's that I observed. I now understand why the teacher's ask for 2 boxes of Kleenex. The 5th grade student's I observed would get up to blow their nose or pat the tissue to their face, just to be able to walk by another classmate and smirk at them or say something to them. The class probably went through one whole box of Kleenex in that one day!

My interesting experiences included moving around from classroom to classroom and watching the different teaching styles of various teachers. One teacher was very serious and didn't take one bit of small chatter. But the next class I visited was completely opposite. This particular teacher was fairly new and she played music during her math class and walked around dancing through the tables. The students were very entertained by her and responded to her in a positive way.

One other interesting experience that I took notice of is that in most classes, the students start the period by stating a "good thing" that has happened or that will be happening. This is nice because it gives the student's opportunities to tell the other classmates something exciting about their life.

Although, I do not plan to teach this high of a grade level, I do now have an idea of what to expect from this age of students. These kids need more discipline because they are learning more about each other and what makes each other tick. They know how to press the right buttons and they are a bit more rambunctious.

I like that students are seated close to one another to easily be placed in a group if needed. I have learned that students need attention and strive for it in any way. So, get to know your students. Student's like to talk about upcoming activities so "good things" is an activity that I will be including in my class.
