My takeaway from this article is that students need to develop a knowledge base of basic "facts of strife." Once they are taught to identify inequalities, then students can start to have the discussion on why that inequality exists and what they can do about it.

I tend to think if someone is interested in your zoom background it's most likely just curiosity rather than them participating in "videojudgement."

The article starts off with a story about high school student , Sean. He made a very revealing statement, " I'm invisible but also hyper visible." The majority of t he year he feels invisible to his fellow students and school staff. A couple of times of the year, he feels hyper visible when the school hosts "cultural" events. The author talks about schools often have good intentions with their artwork displays and multicultural celebrations. When students are asked questions about equity, their answers frequently surprise school administrators. Paul Gorski and Kathy Swalwell encourage school to take a deeper dive into recognizing, responding, and redressing bias and cultivating a bias-free environment.
I do recall as a teacher, when the topic of civic rights or equity was in our text book, it was often in past tense like it was non-existent. Nothing in the article suggested to me that there is a quick solution to road to Equity Literacy. Many practices and polices have to be looked at again with an equity lens and discussions must be had often with students across the curriculum in order to see progress in the right direction.
