Uniquely Human: Podcast

Barry Prizant, the author of Uniquely Human co-hosts a podcast where they interview individuals about autism. This podcast brings different perspectives and stories on autism. Having different perspectives on the podcast helps outsiders gain a better understanding of the complex world that is autism. Prizant's book changed my view on autism in many ways. He helped me realize that I should be asking "Why?" It is such a simple yet powerful question because then the teacher meets the child where they are at and tries to find solutions to the most benefit of the child, instead of disregarding or completely changing behavior.

Finding Cooper's Voice Blog

Similar to the podcast, this blog site is a place where different individuals and families with autism can write about their stories. Finding Cooper's Voice was started by Cooper's mother and she makes videos and blog posts about the truth of autism. I first heard of Finding Cooper's Voice in one of my undergrad courses and I have kept up with the family every once in a while. I appreciate the honesty and truth that she puts in her posts. She talks about the struggles, the milestones, the times she cries, the times the whole family laughs and has fun, etc. It gives an unfiltered look at autism.

Speechless with Carly Fleischmann

For one of my other courses, I read and learned about Carly Fleischmann. Her father wrote a book about their story called, Carly's Voice. Carly is an individual with autism who is nonverbal, but through therapies and interventions, Carly found her voice through typing. She now interviews celebrities on her own YouTube channel. Her story still shocks me with how the perfect intervention can make the biggest impact. I enjoy watching her interviews because they are so funny. It is hard to read the book and imagine that a nonverbal individual who destroys rooms, hits her body, and cannot speak a sentence, is still doing those things, but is also able to write letters, go in front of people, and pre-write questions, and type her wishes or thoughts.

Teacher's Voice Blog is a compilation of multiple articles and you can search based on a certain topic. I searched classroom management and a lot of informative articles about creating classroom management, the importance of consistency with classroom management, podcasts on classroom management, etc. Teacher's Voice is a great resource because it puts information, articles, podcasts, videos, etc. on multiple topics that parents and teachers can use as a resource. It is easy to search any topic on the site and find various articles fitting that subject matter.

Spectrum is a resource that is kept up to date on the latest news on autism research. This was a resource I first found through one of my other grad courses. The best thing about this resource is that teachers or parents can come and read up-to-date and current findings on autism. Some of these articles include treatments like ABA therapy. You can search by topic based on what the intention of the reader is. I like to read the latest findings. Spectrum also includes videos, webinars, podcasts, and more.

The field of autism is ever-changing and it is important to stay up to date on information and findings that are provided by reliable sources. Some of these are from parents, who might not be experts in the field, but are still valuable resources because they can give an insight into autism that research or studies could miss. I have bookmarked or saved these pages into my computer or phone so that I can easily open and look at or listen to them.
