This is ironic because of the fact that a pastor would not typically wear a black veil.

2nd Device: Imagery

Where we noticed it:
Pg. 273 "The sexton stood in the porch of Milford meeting house, pulling busily at the bell rope. The old people of the village came stooping along the street. "

How it worked/ what it added:
It gave us more of a vivid image of the setting, and in turn can help us understand the time period of the piece.

Irony: Throughout the story Mr. Hooper, the minister, is wearing a black veil. At his morning church service the churchgoers were frightened because they did not know why he wore the veil. They later found out he was wearing it to attend an afternoon funeral, but he also wore it to a wedding later on in the night.

Symbolism: The black veil symbolizes Mr. Hoopers isolation and his distance from others as well as an all around darkness in the community.
