How long do I have to fix it document

I made a document that shows what date an assignment is due and when is the last possible date I'll accept it, with the key in mind for students who want to fix work. I update this as new assignments come in.

I currently have students make up missing work during office hours or extend the due date. This week I have introduced three opportunities for extra credit to boost their lowest grades. I have also stayed after school for students who needed extra support outside of office hours within the school day.

I currently give the students the opportunity to finish work at home, during office hours and I have a make up day-when students can re-do or catch up on any unfinished work to aid their grade

More consistency

I just got a set of drawers in which I will put all work that I'm returning to students. In the document I mentioned for Question 1, I will add the date that I returned the work. They will have one week from that date to fix/turn things in for the last time. I think this consistency on my end will reduce confusion on how long folks have to fix things/get them in late.

I can create an opportunity to review how they are perfoming and what is missing

To improve these systems, I could have students sign up for office hours a week in advance on a spreadsheet. I could have students hold themselves accountable by having them list the missing work they need to make up, instead of me looking it up.

Due at the end of class

Everything is due at the end of class now. Once you've got a grade in or feedback on it you will get it back and can then fix it using the deadlines in the document and new location of where you get work back.

We do have a policy on how much time students get when they are out or missing work. I think that all teachers should review it together and review it with all students in class, in every class.

Like many, I give multiple opportunities to the students to make up the work. It can be with me or at home.

I pretty much know all the students who are failing and give them daily reminders that I am here to help them succeed (for some it is about being eligible for sports and I remind them about their goals). 2.) Bring attention to the explicit things they can do in the moment to show progress. 3.) STAMPS 4.) Hold them accountable to the office hours doc when I am in structured study

In order to be clearer about who needs to do what specifically I need to be more organized. I feel like I've been so behind on a lot of levels and for a lot of reasons I have yet to get a clear, meta understanding of student success per unit/assignment etc. in terms of work completion (as opposed to understanding). Getting more specific and structured with my understanding of this could help students.

Norming on other things

For example, if we use similar systems for annotating or how to answer test questions or graphing etc. then maybe there will be more consistency accross classes so the differences feel less jaring and are maybe less of a barrier for many students.

Reminding students individually sounds like a lot but in classes where there is two co-teachers, there can be moments for one of the teachers to check in with individual kids. It doesn't have to be every student every day but giving a few kids personal reminders one a week could help.

Create a Student Work Space

Once the bookshelves come in (LOL), I would like to have a student station where they have access to older assignments (hardcopy), note catchers, etc., so they can be more self-reliant with their work. Instead of coming to me and asking what they need, they should be able to look on PowerSchool for missing work, collect the papers they need, sign up for office hours, and then turn in their work. Accountability.

We need to revamp office hours in general, which is a topic for another day. However, I think a way to alert students that a teacher has assigned them office hours would be a good start.

School Community...

In our school community, we should introduce detentions for discipline and Friday/Saturday school for student tutoring/academic support instead of lumping behavioral problems/academic needs in Office Hours. I think Office Hours should be used for gathering work and clarification on assignment directions-it should be mainly independent practice time. It is hard to provide 1:1 attention during Office Hours as sometimes I have 10+ students in one space with a spectrum of needs.

We can hold students accountable to the due date and have a cut off point. They need the structure to help them organize.
