Facebook, snapchat, twitter and Instagram play a big part in how we communicate today, but back in the 1700-1900's communication evolved with the industrial revolution. Before the industrial revolution people had little ways to communicate with each other over long distances a example of this would be on land, the wealthy could hire messengers so they could send letters more frequently

Morse Code was invented by Samuel Morse in 1836. Samuel wanted to revolutionize long-distance communication. The morse code was an electrical signal that was transmitted to telegraph operators by a wire laid between two points. The operators would then translate the code into english words and have the message delivered to the recipient.
The short term effects of using the morse code was to be able to communicate with other people over a long distance.
The long term effect is that the morse code is still used today in a form of communication. A primary example is the use of the morse code being sent via light signals between vessels at sea.

In the Menlo Park Lab 1877 the American inventor and businessman Thomas Edison invented the Phonograph. The phonograph is the first invention able to record and playback, what was recorded. It worked by having tinfoil wrapped around a cylinder in the middle, while turning the handle on one side of the phonograph someone would shout a short message through a pieced on the side, the sound waves coming from your voice would then vibrate the needle making a grove in the foil. Over time the foil would tear from usage. The first words recorded were 'mary had a little lamb.' Thomas Edison suggested that the phonograph could be used for dictation, books that the blind could listen to, record family events, music, toys and clocks that could announce the time. the short term effect of the phonograph since more people could listen to music at home so musicians had a hard time to make a living, this was because less people attended their concerts. The long term effect of the phonograph invented would be not many songwriters still write long symphonies instead song became short and even more recognizable.

Starting in 1894 Guglielmo Marconi began inventing the radio. Marconi wanted to prove how conveniently done communication could be also wanting to convey information from one place to another without wires. In 1896 he was successful in gaining a patent for building the first commercially wireless telegraphy system based on using radio transmissions.
The short term impact was that through this invention it allowed further development of wireless communication. The long term impact is that wireless communication is heavily relied on to this day for a range of uses. For example Televisions, Telephones and broadcasting radio.

Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born American scientist, patented the telephone in 1876. Alexander taught at a school which he established in Boston for the deaf. While teaching at the school he began researching ways of transmitting several telegraph messages over a single wire to help the deaf learn to speak.
He and his associate Thomas Watson, an electrician, successfully tested the telephone 3 days after he was granted the patent. The first words spoken were from Alexander saying, 'Mr Watson-come here-I want to see you.'
The short term impacts of the telephone being used during the time of the invention was being able to communicate a variety of services instantly, including weather reports, firefighting alerts and sports reports. Women were encourage to use the telephone as a way to keep in touch with their child's school and socialise with other women.
The long term impact is that to this day everyone uses the telephone as a means of communicating. Almost every adult living today owns or has access to a telephone of some fashion allowing faster communications on a global scale.

Invented in 1867 by Christopher Lathem Sholes, the first practical typewriter which made it faster to type than to write with hand. Businesses used typewriters for documents letters and other paperwork. Instead of writing notes by hand many schools switched to typewrites this allowed students to learn a skill that they would use in the business world. As new businesses opened they required bookkeeping and other paperwork this got women into the workforce, as secretaries or other jobs that required typing. The long term effect of the typewriter was the development 'qwerty' keyboard. A short effect would be the new jobs that opened up for women as stated above, this empowered woman and gave them a different title than the housewife it also started up schools that educated women on how to use the typewriter.
