I consider myself a global educator because I work to connect my students to other regions of our own country. Through our Nationwide Pen Pal Network, we learn about the lives and learning of children from every region of the United States. Many of the students who were born in this country have never ventured outside of their neighborhoods, not to mention the state. While supporting our language learners from other countries, I remain mindful of the other students who have limited knowledge of the world beyond their immediate surroundings.

We are our worst critic, so when I say this it is not to demean my professional passion of education but it is to declare that it is a wealthy of knowledge that I feel I have only chipped at the tip of the iceberg. I can tell I have progress well beyond the superficial status of a global educator but there is so much I need to learn from other colleagues, this program as well as my professors in the future.

The students in my class represent a variety of cultures, so it is important to me that my students share these cultures with their peers. Every morning I do a "morning meeting" with my class, in which we greet each other, share something about ourselves, and then engage in a lesson that focuses on Social and Emotional competence. I start the year off by inviting students to lead the morning greetings by sharing a greeting or way to say "good morning" from their culture. After all my students have shared, each week I introduce a different language/culture to focus on. This includes learning how to greet others in this language and learning a bit about the culture. I think there are some things I implement in my classroom that prove this, as well as areas that I could grow as a global educator. I think my approach right now is trying to help my students see the whole world that is around them, rather than the little bubble of Mint Hill, Charlotte that they know. One of the ways I am doing this this year is by setting up a pen pal program with children in the country of Columbia. This has not only been exciting for the students but also eye-opening to see how much they have in common to students so far away from them in the world! Last summer I worked for an English school called Ellison. It was the best experience of my life and I learned so much about teaching english. I saw the benefit of having a Native Chinese teacher who could translate for me. In the picture I am in Guatemala where I spent several weeks with the Mayan natives learning about the struggles they have faced and are currently facing. The goal was to learn from them and then to come back and tell others in the states their stories. Our nation is so "sheltered" from what is really going on in the world and it is our job to open the eyes of our neighbors.

We traveled to different sports schools playing game after game. My favorite part of this journey was that after we would play a game, we had an opportunity to interact with the Chinese team we played against. It was amazing to see that you don't have to speak the same language to communicate. We interacted through jumping rope where we used the common language of laughter to connect. It is something that I took with me into the classroom. Looking past language and seeing my students as individuals is key. I try to find different ways to interact if our language is different. Some of those ways may be through a smile, sports, a game, or pictures. This is why I fell in love with teaching math.
