The threshold guardians in high school are the tests and quizzes. I had a lot of them, and I had them frequently. They were used to check my knowledge on the subject at the time. They are challenges that are used to gauge the progression of my learning and are only minor challenges in the overall journey through high school.

Tests and quizzes are threshold guardians because they are challenges that the hero faces that determine whether or not the hero is ready for what is ahead. They are not the main challenge, but one they face o their journey.

My Abyss

The Abyss for me was finals week. It was the challenge that myself and the other initiates had been preparing for. It was the final test of the first semester. It would be the hardest thing we faced all semester. This would test everything the mentors taught us.

Finals week is the abyss because it is the greatest challenge the hero will face on his journey. It is what the hero trains for and is prepared for by the challenges, such as tests, quizzes, and homework. This is it, the final boss battle.

To me the return in the hero's journey from the first semester was Christmas break. I got to go back home and relax. And much like the heroes, I learned something. I learned what to expect out of high school. For example, the work you had to put in to achieve your personal goals.

Winter break is just like the return because like the hero, I got to return to the known world, or home. I became the master of both worlds, because at that point I understood high school.

This is a call to action because he is chosen as the next great kung fu master and must fight an evil one. He thinks about refusing the call but through persistence he takes the call, and the adventure starts.

The threshold guardians for Po could be master Shifu and the Furious Five. They don't believe in him and discourage him in the pursuit of becoming the Dragon Warrior. Master Shifu doesn't even want to cooperate and train him at the beginning of the story.

The Furious Five and Master Shifu are the threshold guardians because they are not the biggest test that the hero has to face, but does have to overcome in order to complete his quest.

Hero's Abyss

Po's abyss and biggest fight in the journey comes when he faces Tai Lung. In order to save everyone he cares for and his village he has to take on the greatest challenge of all. This truly tests his heart, character, and ability.

Hero's Statement

This is the abyss for Po because it is the battle with the shadow, in this case Tai Lung. He has to go through the "death" and "rebirth" in order to defeat him. The death and rebirth can be seen as when he gets the scroll that gives the Dragon Warrior unimaginable power.

The return for Po could be when he defeats Tai Lung and peace is restored in the village. The Furious 5 and Master Shifu respect him. He gains confidence and others gain confidence in him too. He is no longer looked down on but is seen as a leader. His greatest battle is behind him.

This is the return in Po's journey because he learns more about himself and kung fu. The gift he receives from his mentor is faith. His master has faith and believes in him. He is no longer the panda he was before.

My call to action was the morning that high school started. It was the harsh reality that I would be waking up early every day to go to school. Of course I tried to sleep in as much as I could but it wouldn't make the task at hand go away.

This is the call to action because this is the moment that starts the journey that is high school. My refusal of the call came when I tried to sleep in. It was an act of denial because I didn't want to believe the day had come.

Po's call to action was when he was chosen as the next Dragon Warrior. He couldn't believe he was picked and neither could master Shifu or the Furious Five. How could he have been picked as the next Dragon Warrior?
