1.Activity with a Wide Gulf of Execution/Evaluation

Activity: Setting up a smart home bulb using a mobile app.

My Experience & Why It Was Frustrating:
I recently bought a smart bulb and tried to set it up using its official app. The process was far from smooth:

Confusing Instructions: The app told me to “put the bulb in pairing mode,” but it didn’t explain how. After searching online, I found out I had to turn the switch on and off multiple times—a step that wasn’t mentioned.

Wi-Fi Issues: The bulb only supported 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, but my router was on 5GHz. Instead of notifying me, the app just showed a generic "connection failed" message. I had to troubleshoot on my own.

No Feedback on Progress: After entering my Wi-Fi password, the app just showed a spinning wheel. I wasn’t sure if it was working or frozen.

Restarting from Scratch: When the setup failed, the only option was to reset the bulb and start over. I had to go through the annoying on-off blinking process again.

Activity with a Narrower Gulf of Execution/Evaluation

Activity: Pairing my wireless earbuds with my phone.

Why It Was Easier:
When I got my earbuds, pairing was simple:

One-button pairing: I just opened the case, and my phone immediately detected the earbuds.

Clear feedback: A voice prompt said, "Pairing mode," and an LED flashed blue.

Easy retry: The first time I tried, I accidentally pressed the wrong option, but I could easily go back and retry without resetting the device.

Automatic connection: The next time I used the earbuds, they connected automatically—no extra steps needed.

Lessons That Could Improve Smart Bulb Setup

Better Instructions in the App: The app should clearly explain how to put the bulb into pairing mode instead of making users figure it out themselves.

Real-time Feedback on Connection Attempts: Instead of a spinning wheel, the app should show progress (e.g., “Connecting to Wi-Fi,” “Verifying credentials”).

Smart Wi-Fi Detection: If the Wi-Fi network is incompatible (5GHz instead of 2.4GHz), the app should notify the user instead of showing a vague error.

Easier Retry Process: If the setup fails, users should be able to go back a step instead of resetting everything.

Automatic Detection for Reconnection: Once set up, the bulb should remember the Wi-Fi and reconnect automatically, like Bluetooth devices.

By improving these areas, smart home devices could be much easier to set up, just like pairing Bluetooth earbuds—quick, intuitive, and frustration-free.
