It allows there to be more than one right answer and gives the students an opportunity to use deeper thinking to explain their answers. When it comes to technology, although very simple, I've seen k-3 classes spending part of the ELA time  (10 minutes or so) engaged in typing lessons. I think it's interesting that there is a focus on exposing students to skills that they will need to communicate effectively...
