We've tried to get them to create a Kickstart pack this year so that they are more likely to keep and refer back to the handouts. This type of organisation of materials could be worth a mention (perhaps if we don't manage workbooks we can encourage them to take a DIY workbook approach). Having said that I also want to get more students taking notes and drafting assignments earlier purely because it is more efficient so would like to do more to help them with that.

I think this is Lisa's idea that she mentioned to me (perhaps inspired by the MOOC?) As I understood the students have an online wiki or shared doc where they can define terms they use in their practice or have learned at Uni. This might be a good way to get them to take ownership of their learning and be a leveller as would help students who haven't worked in the public sector don't know all the acronyms :)

This is going to fall at the end of week 3. Rebecca and I talked about a significant part of this being library-based. I will talk to Helen and come up with a plan for an activity to build their confidence with library searching. Another idea I had was to really put the ownership of the day on them: e.g. start by getting them to think about what they want/need to get out of the day, or even get them to come with a plan of 3 goals to meet. I'm not sure what elements of last year we should keep - the public speaking was perhaps a good ice-breaker and The Divide seemed to stick with them, but is it the most helpful exercise at this point in the degree? Will think more on this!

I ended up watching this last night! Sensationalist title but actually quite a sympathetic perspective on how changes to immigration laws, housing benefit and the rise of zero hours contracts are making it hard for people to pay their rents. This episode was filmed in Leeds and Wakefield so might be an interesting one to use. Having said that it isn't massively focused on children and families, with just one of the tenants (Barbora who migrated from Slovakia) having 3 kids.
