Song: Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield

I chose this song because the speaker talks about how only you can take control of your life and you can do so by being yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin. The speaker states, "I'm undefined, I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned." This message of individuality and staying true to yourself empowers the audience to believe in themselves and to write your own history, regardless of the past. In Stargirl, Stargirl remains true to herself and in the end not only finds her true happiness but inspires others to do the same.

YouTube Clip: Lady Gaga

I chose this YouTube clip because Lady Gaga, a famous artist, discusses how it is important to remain true to yourself. She is very candid when she discusses her mental illness and how she copes. Lady Gaga urges others to remain true to their identity and say no to things that you do not want to do. It is important to "curate your own life" and do what makes you happy no matter what. In the book Stargirl, Stargirl was tempted to change who she was, but in the end, remained true to herself. She taught the school a lesson and helped the other students find their inner "Stargirl", resulting in a more interesting and diverse student body.

Song: Me Against The World by Tupac

I chose this song because the speaker states "don't ever change, keep your essence", telling the audience to remain true to themselves. He urges the audience to ignore societal expectations and peer pressure and to follow your own dreams. In Stargirl, Stargirl ignores societal pressures to be "normal" and finds true happiness when she lets herself be unique.

Poem: The Meddling of Minds

I chose this poem because the speaker discusses individuality and how they used to use their mind in unique ways, "like tree roots using the lack of light to thrive," but then society destroyed their spirit. It discusses how people tend to judge the youth and assume that they are shallow and lack originality. In Stargirl, Stargirl stood out and embraced her individuality, and refrained from falling into the trap of conformity.
