The daimyo was asked by Meiji leaders to return the land to the state and was given a pension as compensation, even though the land was always the property of the emperor. The samurai system was destroyed and the samurai were given a tax-free income. It didn't last long, so the samurai had to get jobs. The feudal system was done.

Since the Meiji leaders planned to improve Japan’s government, they needed to point out to the people that loyalty towards the emperor will make their country a stronger nation.

FUN FACT: The emperor already had been a powerful symbol to the Japanese people, it was believed that he was the descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Their first step to success was to move the location of the imperial court. It used to be in Kyoto, but then moved to the capital of Japan called Tokyo (used to be called Edo). This got the government and the emperor in the same place. This relation with each other would make it obvious to the people in Japan.

The Samurai are rebelling against their own shoguns to bring back the emperor and become part of the government.

2. Oligarchy in Meiji Japan

Since they took control of the government without being elected by the citizens, it is called an oligarchy (unelected group of powerful leaders). Many changes started to happen once the advisors of Japan realized Westerners took over China (their next door neighbors). They knew by becoming a strong country, it would take military and economic power to show the modern world that Japan is powerful on its own.

The Meiji leaders had 2 goals they needed to achieve in order to improve or change the way Japan was governed:

1. To create a strong government that would unite the country and rule it effectively

2. To create a government closely related to the democracies of the West

~Prince Mutsuhito was made emperor in Japan when he was about our age.. whut.

~During the first year of him ruling, he chose to be called "Meiji", which means "enlightened rule"

~"Meiji Restoration" is known as the 3 year period, beginning in 1867 when Meiji came to throne.

~ In 1912 Emperor Meiji's time of power ended, because of his death, this was known as the "Meiji Period"

My score was 7482... even though i got so many wrong I beat Ana!!!!!!!!!! I think that the guy was hot thank you very much also on the test if there was no timer i would do much better then what I did!

My score was the second best ever best 19044 :). Out of the world the best was 75 374 and i got the second best. I am just glad that i beat Ana who will be the girl in L.A. It taught me a lot about the Meiji period. I only wish that it would tell you the correct answer when you got it wrong.
