Gardner’s Theories of Intelligences

When teachers set aside a grade, behavioral tendencies, and classroom structures one can discover the unique intelligences of all children and students. While some students are more easily accustomed to typical teaching methods seen in the classroom, others more easily learn through other methods. Gardner develops his theory that argues all students are uniquely intelligent in a variety of ways. He writes, “students, who were not gifted with traditional linguistic or logical skills, were not void of cognitive abilities, but were merely cognizant in different ways” (Jackson et al., 2009, p. 72).

Students who learn best through spoken words often can be attributed with linguistic intelligence. Reynolds (2012) writes that students who learn linguistically have increased “sensitivity to spoken and written language” (Reynolds, 2012). Some examples of instruction that best suits these students include: recorded lectures, youtube videos, student videos, commenting of others’ works, computer searches, storytelling, and any kind of activity that involves reading, writing, word games, and stories.

Some students most easily respond to teaching that focuses on the logical side of the content. This does not need to be math and can encompass any kind of teaching technique that emphasizes problem solving, strategy, connections, classifications, numerical targets, and goal setting. Reynolds (2012) explains that these learners think scientifically, and enjoy complete visual representations of the learning. Think excel sheets, organization, manipulative skills, patterns, and other related abstractions.

Many students struggle to sit still and still be engaged in class. Often, these students would much rather learn through their bodies. Reynolds (2012) explains that teachers who can present material in a tactile way will give students who learn kinesthetically the experiences that help them learn.

Typically, these students would benefit from lessons that relate to spatial and visual intelligences. For example, Reynolds (2012) writes that "simply using a powerpoint presentation in the classroom to present your topic will help the visual learners remember the important items of your topic" (Reynolds, 2012).

Technology would help these students through webcams, online collaboration tools, and other tools to implament group projects.
