Since Marilyn was little she has dreamt of becoming a doctor. She has always been ambitious and aimed high in school, which in a way represents her want for independence and control over her own life. Opposite to her mothers view.

Because of this passion and want she has, and not being able to fulfill her wishes since she got pregnant, she has shown to care a lot more about Lydia's schooling in hopes she can get pushed into what Marilyn couldn't be. She has been subtly pushing Lydia into it.

Her mother believed a women should stay home, cook, clean and take care of the children. It was not "right" to marry someone of a different race, and Marilyn's mother was opposed to her daughter marrying someone who wasn't white. Saying how her children will be "outsiders" and that she will eventually regret this choice. From this I think Marilyn saw this as an opportunity to reach away from what her mothers wants, this is also the moment she fully steps away from her mother and the limits she has put onto Marilyn. Choosing her own ambitions and the readiness to start her own life.

Marilyn's mother has always viewed the world as if the main roles of a woman is being a mother and wife. Giving Marilyn a view of a life she wishes not to have, wanting a break from this restrictions.

When Marilyn was gone to deal with her mothers death, she realized that she doesnt want to become as her mother, as a traditional stay at home mom. Unfortunately with her getting pregnant during her schooling she slowly became what her mother was. Marilyn was torn between taking care of her family and her long time dream, Marilyn doesn't realize it but she treats Lydia in the same way her mother treated her. Marilyn’s relationship with her mother becomes a blueprint for Marilyn's relationship with Lydia.

Growing up, my mother, who emigrated to Canada in her thirties, constantly encouraged my siblings and I to excel academically in order for us to have steady careers as doctors, lawyers, etc. She wanted us to have the possibilities that she was never given, which improved our lives but also put a lot of pressure on us to perform well.
