Assessment for Learning needs to be carried out to verify whether teaching has been carried out effectively such that learning has taken place. Without assessments, teachers will continue to deliver content potentially ineffectively, while students will be wasting their time in school and they will come to find school lessons irrelevant and boring.

Often times, we feel we have preped the lesson, in the rush of time go through the whole lesson. We often forget to get some feedback on student's understanding during the class only to realise by the end of the lesson...they dont understand. More time is spent next lesson to re-teach.

We need feedback to know whether learning has taken place. For example, for a skill just taught, we see whether students can reproduce it. But sometimes, the students may not be able to immediately understand the concepts or not yet able to perform some skills. They are learning something, but just somehow need more time to fully absorb the info. So sometimes, it is difficult to determine.

I've seen some teachers approach 'tougher' students like this, where they see their responsibility mainly in terms of delivering the lessons.
