Secondly, I think the author needs to describe a personal experience, which also relates to others. For example, the author describes how he feels scared and paranoid because of the war. This also relates to how most other people are feeling. 

Thirdly, I think the author needs to share his takeaway from the experience with the reader, and persuade them to believe it. For example, the author’s takeaway is that everyone has problems, so it’s good to share solutions. He uses devices like rhetorical questions to make readers believe his point.

Firstly, in the “This I Believe” essay, the author, Edward R. Murrow used words that are easy to understand and comprehend by many. He also uses different kinds of examples such as fear during WWII, etc, to allow the readers to easily relate to his personal experiences.

Secondly, as this is a personal essay, the most suitable point of view must be first person as this essay came from the author Edward himself directly. As mentioned in the examples, he uses his own experiences to allow readers to relate through his easy, causal, and affable tone in the essay.

And lastly, how his own experiences can lead to the main topic of the — the beliefs of people. The author shared his opinions on people sharing their beliefs and then he shared his takeaway from the broadcast transcript. By doing so, the personal views and takeaways of the author himself can be expressed thoroughly.

-personal essay involved examples in order to give more details on the writer’s personal experience. Therefore, the writer would use descriptive to convey a memorable picture of what the writer is describing.

Eg. “Around us all, now high like a distant thunderhead now close upon us with the wet choking intimacy of a London fog, there is an enveloping cloud of fear”

3.Argumentative

-personal essay involved personal opinions to bring out the readers’ self reflection. Therefore, the writer would use argumentative to to convince the readers to his personal view with the evidence.

Eg. “What truths can a human being afford to furnish the cluttered nervous room of his mind with, when he has no real idea how long a lease he has on the future?”

However,there are still some differences between argumentative, descriptive, narrative essay and personal essay.

-doesn’t require lots of researched/ factual data to support the writer’s stance, but require the relevant experience of the writer/famous people.

Eg. In the example of general Lucius Clay and Mrs. Roosevelt, there is no any factual data, but the dialogue between them two.

-may not have a lot scenes in the examples. Since the example doesn’t need to be very detailed and lengthy, the most important is to bring out the point that the writer wants to express.

Eg. In the example of Helen Keller, the writer only wrote about her personal settings and some briefly introduction of her, but not telling all events in her life, since it is not a story about Helen Keller.

-doesn’t have a fixed perspective

Eg. “This reporter’s beliefs are in a state of flux.” “I do not believe in, than the other way around.” These two sentences are using third person perspective and first person perspective respectively. Therefore, in personal essay, it is not a must to use third/first person perspective in the whole essay. As long it can bring out the writer’s view, it is fine.

Eg. “A-bomb” “don’t” the writer would use short forms of words. Therefore, it is not a must to use formal language in the whole essay, informal language can also be involved.
