In doing so the narrator notices how there are some features that may show that Madeline is still living. Rodrick is getting more crazy with the death of his beloved sister and the only hope to keep the family line going. The narrator also takes notice of how Rodrick has been going through lots of his mental disorders "His orderly manner had vanished. There were many times, indeed, when I thought his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret." (330)
 The narrator notices sounds from the basement upon where Madeline lies "to certain low and indefinite sounds which came." (330) These sounds are from Madeline and she is still alive yet Rodrick and the Narrator do not know that. Throughout the night the Narrator continues to hear sounds and becomes increasingly worried. "I felt that I should sleep no more during the night." (330). He paces around the room until Rodrick comes up and asks the Narrator to stay. "you have not seen it?---But stay!" This shows that the narrator values power of the inner- world and imagination because he shows how Rodrick and his wildness is slowly coming to him even though the narrator knows that Rodrick has mental disorders. The narrator knows that his dear old friend worries about how the house is out to kill them and that the Usher's family tree is sure to end. He also knows that Rodrick has lost his old senses and is losing it due to his sister dieing. (Rodrick thinks she is the only hope to keep the family running.) Poe constructs the scene where Madeline's coffin was placed, describing it similarly to a medieval dungeon. Using the scene for suspense builds up for future scenes to increase suspense and the building climax of the story.
