Student Work Reflection #1: PASSION - What is one piece of work that you feel best demonstrates the PASSION that you have for Spanish?

The piece of work that best demonstrates the passion I have for Spanish can best be seen in my project on Latin cuisine. I have always found Latin culture fascinating, and have always been curious to try and learn new ideas from other parts of the world. In this project, myself and a fellow peer had to prepare a Latin dish to serve to others at school. We chose to create a Jicama Slaw, a root vegetable predominantly grown in Mexico mixed with other ingredients. The dish was surprisingly delicious; I can see myself making it once again. Learning about the traditions and importance of food in culture has made me want to pursue a deeper understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Student Reflection #3 - PARTICIPATION - How has learning a world language helped you to understand your unique role as a global citizen? In the future, how will your language skills facilitate your active PARTICIPATION in a multicultural society?

Learning Spanish has opened countless opportunities. I have been able to use my knowledge of the language in a variety of situations, whether it be out in public or in the workplace. I strongly believe everyone should learn about other cultures to better understand each other, and Spanish immersion as taught me just that. I am currently pursuing to attend nursing school following graduation from Nipmuc, and I look to minor in Spanish while in college. I would love to use my knowledge of language to travel to Spanish-speaking countries to provide medical care. I await a lifetime of multicultural possibilities.

Student Reflection #2 - PERSEVERANCE - What is one piece of work that you found rather challenging? Why? How did you PERSEVERE in order to be successful?

The most challenging piece of work I have ever done has been this year in Latin American Experience. We had to go outside our comforts and speak to people from the community who have immigrated to the United States from another country to promote community connection and global understanding. Followed by a formal interview on video, the challenge was finding someone to speak with. We had an individual prepared to sit down with, but our schedules did not align. With only about a week left until the project was due, my group scrambled to find another interviewee. Luckily, we spoke with the girl's soccer coach from Nipmuc who grew up in Puerto Rico, and learned an incredible amount about his story and the struggles of leaving home for a foreign land. Having gone out into the community has opened my eyes to all the local people who have stories of overcoming hard times, a grand amount of perseverance and achieving the American dream from the perspective of an immigrant.

If you care to learn more, please visit the group's blog to follow our journey:
mmbspanishexperience.wordpress.com
