The narration for this documentary is provided by the people who live on the island giving them the opportunity to tell their own stories in their own words. They describe the way of life in the peace and quiet of the island for young and old. 

This episode of ‘Pieces of Land’ was directed by Tony Barry and broadcast on 21 June 1976.

‘Pieces of Land’ was a four part series filmed in some well known Irish havens of peace and quiet. 

The Greeks had no word for what later would be called "satire", although the terms cynicism and parody were used. Modern critics call the Greek playwright Aristophanes one of the best known early satirists: his plays are known for their critical political and social connentary.

Meitheal is the Irish word for a work team, gang, or party and denotes the co-operative labour system in Ireland where groups of neighbours help each other in turn with farming work, such as harvesting crops.  Neighbours who give their work to others are helped in turn with their own heavy seasonal tasks to the heart of the concept is community unity through cooperative work and mutually reciprocal support.  Meitheal is the Irish expression of the ancient and universal appliance of cooperation to social need.

Dotted across Paul Henry’s landscapes are the scarlet splashes of the cótaí dearga, the traditional red skirts of the West of Ireland. Beautiful and practical, they could be worn over the head as a cloak, enveloping the wearer like a hijab. Images of them are so familiar yet alien.
 
Who were the women who wore them? Spurred by the question of how tradition is created and authenticity judged, Cótaí Dearga explores the iconography of the cótaí dearga, and discovers an invented history for them.
