In traditional Korean culture, boys are often privileged over girls. I saw this happen a lot when I visited my relatives as a child. My aunt would serve food to the my uncles and even my 8-year-old nephew before the women. When I talked to my parents about this, they agreed that this was an unfair and outdated tradition. I decided that I would teach my own children differently in the future.

Coach Soper was Mr. Soper before anything else. Everyday I had his 8th grade social studies class. One day, after many years of baseball, I had decided to give Lacrosse a shot. To this day, there is no way I would be playing if it weren´t for Coach Soper. After giving me everything I needed to play; Coach would then send me to lessons to perfect my craft. On top of that, he helped form the way I think as he was a huge mentor during this period. Whether I was good for a beginner or not, it didn´t matter who I was playing. Coach Soper brought out this competitive and tenacious mindset that I had in me, and I am forever grateful for the opportunities and memories given to me.

Injury and lessons

Throughout many years, I have been injured a numerous amount of times. In ninth grade I sprained my achiles through the first week of football practice. At first, I didn´t understand the severity of the injury so I would put ice cubes in my cleats from the water jug in order to numb the pain.Over time, because I didn´t sit out, my body started to compensate by holding my weight on the other foot. Through those two months, I ended up developing a herniated disc in my back. Back problems are still a problem I deal with today. In tenth grade I sprained both of my ankles, and in eleventh grade I broke my hand and tore many ligaments in my foot. I did all of this while never sitting out a game. My priorities were set straight, and my actions of not sitting out had consequences. Also another setback I dealt with was my mentality. I know all of these injuries sound crippling;however, there is nothing more crippling than the inability to believe in yourself.

Something that has led to personal growth for me is being on a weight room routine. This routine is for well being and for developing myself as an athlete. The harder days in the weight room have made me into the person I am today. Through pain and hard work, through fear and confidence, I always have a backbone and foundation to lean on.

Whenever I listen to music, I lose track of time. Between analyzing lyrics, or humming a catchy rhythm. Music is an escape for me when times get tough, or when I need a boost doing my homework. Music is a message that needs to be told. Music is a story that needs to be heard. Music will forever hold a special meaning to me.

My name is George Henry, I am a junior from Oyster Bay, NY.I attend Oyster Bay High school. I play both varsity football and varsity lacrosse. I have two older brothers, and a dog named Larry. I am in band and I play the Base Clarinet in the Wind Ensemble. I have pride in my work ethic, and I am never satisfied when it comes to awards or results.
