In 1995, the Australian government launched an inquiry into the policy of forced child removal. The report was delivered to Parliament on the 26th May 1997. It estimated that between 10 per cent and 33 per cent of all Indigenous children were separated from their families between 1910-1970.
When Kevin Rudd came to power in 2007, he promised to deliver a national apology to the Stolen Generations. This promise was fulfilled on the 13th February 2008.

Assimilation comes from the Latin assimilationem, meaning ''similarity.” People of different backgrounds and beliefs undergo assimilation when, through living together, they come to see themselves as part of a larger community, or when a small group is absorbed into, and made part of, a bigger group.

In the first half of the twentieth century, right up until the 1960's, the Australian government sought to create a single, uniform white Australian culture. Children taken from their parents were taught to reject their Indigenous heritage, and forced to adopt white culture. Their names were often changed, and they were forbidden to speak their traditional languages. Some children were adopted by white families, and many were placed in institutions where abuse and neglect were common
