Theme

I believe the theme of the book was “even though life gets hard it goes on”. I think John Green chose this theme because it is important to realize this. That no matter what time goes on, with or without you. I believe the lesson was to persevere, because even though the times get tough, it won’t last forever, so keep going.

"If you're lost and alone or you're sinking like a stone, Carry on, May your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground and, Carry on"

I chose this song, "Carry On" by Fun., because it has a similar theme. In the book Aza's mom says, "your now is not your forever" (page 93) which means that whatever circumstance you're in, it won't last forever. The song talks about moving on and leaving your past behind. It says how the past was not good but even though the times got hard they carried on and things got better.

"When you said your last goodbye, I died a little bit inside, I lay in tears in bed all night, Alone without you by my side" All I Want - Kodaline

In the book it talks a lot about loss, both Aza and Davis having lost a parent, and Davis eventually losing both, "...when you lose someone, you realize you'll eventually lose everyone" (page 81). Later in the book it talks about how Davis looks at far away stars because from those stars they see an older image, when his mother was alive. In the song it says that all they want is for their love to come back, and how they'll try to move on and find someone to replace the hole the previous person had left.

A major part of the book has to do with Aza'z anxiety. She goes through it everyday, but she still goes on. In this song it talks about moving on from a bad past and making a better future. Aza eventually learns to go on, even though the future is uncertain that she has a choice to make it better.

One of the major themes in "Finding Nemo" is to not give up. Marlin and Dory go through many obstacles to find Nemo, eventually getting to him and going home. In the book it says, ""There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn't", which means that even though you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, it doesn't mean it's not there; so keep going.
