I think John Green chose this theme because it is important to realize this. That no matter what time goes on, with or without you. I believe the lesson was to persevere, because even though the times get tough, it won’t last forever, so keep going.

The song talks about moving on and leaving your past behind. Later in the book it talks about how Davis looks at far away stars because from those stars they see an older image, when his mother was alive.
