Recycling is the process of reusing things most commonly plastic instead of throwing stuff away this is done to combat pollution and prevent garbage in nature

Recycling is one of the most important measures wether it be in your own home or big efforts such as in Motala Sweden where they are building site zero the worlds largest recycling plant in a plan to recycle 200 thousand tons of plastic per year.

Due to the high tech the site zero plant has received new coverage with for example Euronews stating that “The ‘Site Zero’ plant in the city of Motala is being billed as the biggest of its kind, capable of sorting up to 20,000 tonnes of plastic packaging a year.

It’s not simply size but cutting-edge technology that makes this feat possible. Infrared red cameras are used to separate the tide of waste arriving at the factory gates into 12 different types of plastic.”

This shows that site zero is a futuristic facility and will most likely lead the way to a fully recycling world

Pollution is when the environment is contaminated and damaged by harmful chemicals and emissions

A example of pollutions is what happend on the 20th of April 2010 when a semi-submersible oil rig called the deepwater-horizon would go up in flames in the Gulf of Mexico after a explosion inside one of the methane gas tubes of the station. On the 22nd of April a oil leak would be discovered near the station which had leaked a large oil slick which began to spread. For a total of 87 days the station would leak until workers where able to close off underwater pipes with the disaster resulting in a total of 210,000,000 spilled gallons of oil ending up on gulf beaches.

Depletion is when too much of a resource is used and the stock of this cannot regrow until something is eventually fully depleted

An example of such depletion is the deforestation in Brazil where to support global food markets especially in the soy and meat markets and in the global wood market. To support these industries farmers and lumberjacks have cut down and burned large quantities of the Amazon which is the home to more then 40.000 species of animals and plants resulting in not only the depletion of the amazon rain forest itself but also in the decrease and extinction of thousands of different organisms.

degradation is the worsening of the quality of the environment such as fragmentation of the land and air pollution

this can be seen in Delhi in various forms. This can be seen in for example the fragmentation as now most of the area has been built up and the “green landscape” has decreased over time which also has lowered the air quality with Delhi ranking as one of the worst air polluted city due to many factories in close proximity to urban areas and not a adequate amount of plants and trees to take up the emitted c02.

This is also effecting the local wildlife which is stated in this article by A14 “India’s tigers, elephants and other wildlife live, mate & travel through forests outside protected areas, but these corridors are already dangerously fragmented, according to six reports from government-funded agencies. Now, a new forest law cleared by Parliament in August 2023 will make it easier to erase such corridors and similar forests not recorded as forests nationwide, but particularly in the Himalayan region, where wildlife habitats in entire states are at risk of decimation.”

This article states how the degradation is effecting the local environment and states how it can harm not only the people.

Overfishing fishing too much for fish to naturally reproduce.

a form of depletion is overfishing which is a problem especially in the North Sea due to bottom dragging fishing trawlers which drag large nets across the ocean floor which causes a large amount of damage to the sea floor which not only depletes the fishing amount due to overfishing but also causes damage to future fish eggs and plants therefore destroying even more fish and depleting larger amounts of seafloor.

Bridges built for animals to cross instead of crossing highways

to combat animals dying due to car crashes and to stop fragmentation Dutch civil engineers are starting to use wildlife crossings built over highways. These wildlife crossings provide a way for animals to cross the highway safely making it safer for both animals and people as collisions have also decreased. And it’s proven effective with studies showing a 86% decrease in car accidents involving wildlife resulting in other countries such as America and Australia also adopting similair systems
