Jennifer Hyduke answers: People in my life who motivate me and inspire me, are my husband, my son, my two dogs, and my best friend Veronica she is a huge animal lover too. But my husband has always supported me; I could come home with 5 dogs and a cat, sometimes he never knows what's in the car that might need to spend the night here. So, anyway, he's very supportive, he always has been. As is my son. My mom and dad are the reason I grew up with animals we've always had animals. My childhood dog was Joshua, and then as my sister was growing up we always had dogs; we had two airedales, and two cats one named Shaky and one named Cruella DeVille. Question: In the 10 or so years you've working with the Humane Society, what would you change and what impact would that have on you and others nowadays?

A: If I could change things I would have a more modern, state-of-the-art shelter, and I would have spay and neuter laws in place. That'd may be the largest difference in what we do., for sure. This is a copy of the letter.]]> 2017-12-03 23:21:27 UTC https://padlet.com/mstoicov2023/Changemaker/wish/212671080 Some Info mstoicov2023 https://padlet.com/mstoicov2023/Changemaker/wish/212681418      “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”,  is a quote you may know  as the Golden Rule, and applies to Jennifer Hyduke’s work.  Jennifer Hyduke is the president of the Humane Society of Marlboro County in Bennettsville, South Carolina. She was part of shutting down the Marlboro County Animal Shelter, successfully treats sick cats and dogs, and sends animals to foster homes and other shelters.
     The Marlboro County Animal Shelter was the old animal shelter for Marlboro County. It was a worn-down building that needed multiple repairs, and in 2011, they gained some keys to access the building after hours to take pictures of the horrible conditions. The people of the county were furious, and an agreement was offered: the building was closed for a year while repairs were happening. The buidling was then occupied again, but after mvoig out has not been used. 
     As well as closing the old shelter, Jennifer and the Humane Society successfully treats cats and dogs that are sick and may have a disease. 95% of the dogs that the Humane Society takes in are heartworm positive, that is deadly if nobody does anything. The society created a “Heartworm Fund” to raise money, and now all/most of the treatments are successful. Ringworm in cats used to be big problem, it was costly and time-consuming to treat but now the Humane Society has been able to communicate with a ringworm expert.
     Even with a bigger building and great treatments, there is never enough space for every single animal they receive. “There is rarely a time when there is an empty kennel at that shelter,”, Jennifer Hyduke said. The society has taken in 2,504 dogs and sent 2,154 of them to rescue groups over 4 years. And also throughout 4 years, 713 cats were taken in and sent 435 of them to rescue groups. The Humane Society has also adopted out about 200 cats through their cages at Petsmart. They also have 10 foster homes for cats and dogs.
Jennifer Hyduke makes a difference in the world of animals and treats them like they are fellow human friends, and, as she says, “...I’ll be involved forever.”, she will continue on loving and taking care of animals.
